One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned over the past two years is that my health and sanity come first. Before any job or boss, before money, before chasing all these dreams that I have. I need to be in the best shape mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
When I had my mental breakdown in 2017, I was scared of what was going to happen to my job if I just decided to take a break from work and focus on my mental health (and healing). Well, unfortunately for me, that thought didn’t really matter because things had gotten so bad that I didn’t have a choice but to leave work for two weeks and go to a psychiatric hospital. I really had no choice in the matter – I was either going to continue working and run the risk of falling apart every single day, or I was going to choose healing. Choosing my health over a job was the best decision I made.
I was so happy when I saw rapper Riky Rick’s recent posts on social media. The award-winning rapper took to Twitter to announce that he’s taking a break from the spotlight. He mentioned that he isn’t in the right space mentally and is taking time to find his faith.
I may not know what’s going on in the rapper’s life, but I do know that choosing to focus on yourself (whether it’s healing, finding yourself, your faith or whatever) is the best thing you can do. We live in a world where people are praised for achieving material success, where people are validated by the number of followers they have on social media, or how famous or rich they are. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that there’s something wrong with material success, being rich or famous.
All I’m saying is that there’s much more to life than all these things. What’s the point of having it all if you don’t know who you are, and you’re seeking validation from the world? What’s the point of having it all if you’re not at peace? What’s the point of having it all if you have no one to share it with? What’s the point of having it all if you’re having sleepless nights, not in the right state of mind? What’s the point of having it all if you’re still empty inside?
I’m not rich or famous but I know for a fact that being in the right space mentally is vital. I recently made a really tough decision, I had to leave something that was starting to threaten my peace. It wasn’t an easy decision but it came with so much relief. I’m in a much better place mentally because I’m now able to leave situations that trigger me, no matter how desirable they might seem. I can’t stress enough how important it is to take care of your mental health – if I could, I’d stand on rooftops and scream this message.
Do whatever you need to do to make sure that you’re in the best state mentally, physically, spiritual and emotionally. I hope Riky Rick finds all that he’s seeking and that his journey will serve as inspiration to others.
